Cetrea's technology and products are based on research within Pervasive Computing, Human-Computer Interaction and Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). The orginal Cetrea technology was a result of the research project entitled "The Interactive Hospital" – iHospital^® – and Activity-Based Computing (ABC). The original research project (iHospital) has ended, but more information about the project is available on the original website (in Danish). Cetrea continuously engage in Research and Innovation Projects with academic institutions, including the Centre for Pervasive Healthcare at the University of Aarhus, the IT University in Copenhagen, and Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

The original ideas and software technology has been published and presented at different scientific conferences. The research has contributed to research within both computer science and medical informatics.
